Understanding the intervention, regrowth and consequences
A hair transplant is a procedure in which hair follicles are taken from a donor area, usually the back of the scalp, and implanted into thinning or bald areas. The FUE, Sapphire FUE or DHI technique is chosen by the medical team according to the donor area and the area to be treated.
Hair regrowth milestones after a transplant
| Period | What is generally observed |
|---|---|
| Around month 3 | The first hairs often appear. |
| Around months 5 to 6 | Growth becomes more visible. |
| Up to 12 months or longer | The result continues to develop. |
Only the local anaesthetic injections may be uncomfortable. Once the anaesthesia takes effect, the rest of the procedure is generally painless.
Hair loss often progresses over a lifetime and may slow down after the age of 40. A transplant performed earlier may require further sessions if hair loss continues.
With the FUT technique, a thin linear scar may remain. With FUE, small pale dots may be visible at very close range, but they are usually hidden by the hair.
People with androgenetic hair loss may be candidates. Both men and women should first have the cause of their hair loss investigated.
Age alone is not enough. The cause of the hair loss, its stability, the quality of the donor area and the person’s state of health are the deciding criteria.
The first hairs often appear around the third month. Growth becomes more visible at around 5 or 6 months, and the result continues to develop for up to 12 months or longer.
Follicles taken from a resistant area generally keep their characteristics. However, ageing and the loss of non-transplanted hair may continue.
No. The immune system would reject foreign follicles. The hair used must come from the patient themselves.
The procedure usually lasts between 6 and 10 hours. A stay of at least 3 days is recommended for the procedure and the first check-up.
Like any surgery, a hair transplant carries risks. They are generally limited in a healthy person, but allergies, current treatments and medical history must be assessed.
The direction, angle and density are planned with the practitioner. The aim is to achieve an implantation consistent with the face and the existing hair.
Sapphire FUE and DHI are among the current techniques. PRP treatment may sometimes be offered as a complement, depending on the case.
Research continues, but FUE and DHI remain established techniques for androgenetic hair loss. A natural look depends above all on the indication, the design and the execution.
